Abstract Analysis of the lifetime occupational histories of over 1,000 persons with bladder cancer compared to control groups showed 2 patterns of industrial hazard. The classic pattern, risk from all periods of exposure and development of tumours at a lower age, was found among chemical dye workers and possibly textile dyers, tailor's cutters and hairdressers. A long-term pattern present among weavers, tailors, tailors' pressers and possibly among cooks, electricians and some engineering workers showed risk after long periods of exposure only.
