Abstract Visual disorders are divided into 2 main groups: ametropias and anomalies of binocular vision. The ametropias or refractive errors are anomalies in the focusing components of the eye and comprise the largest group of common visual disorders. Myopia, hypermetropia, astigmatism and presbyopia are in this category. These disorders are discussed in relation to performance; corrective methods are indicated. An account of binocular anomalies is given and the problems and capabilities on the one-eyed person are evaluated. The relationship between visual acuity and illumination is explained with special reference to the ametropic eye; the importance of the use of magnifying aids is stressed.
