Abstract English translation of an article in Russian, published in Naučnye raboty institutov ohrany truda VCSPS, Moskva, USSR, 1967, No.46, p.34-39. Describes a study undertaken to determine the physiological effects of a 50Hz high-voltage electric field on staff working on 400-500kV outdoor installations after complaints of impaired health, fatigue, drowsiness and headaches. Physiological changes observed include: vagotonic changes in the cardiovascular system; weakening of temperature control processes; reduction in resistance to electric current; functional mobility of neuro-muscular apparatus of the hand; and weakening of neurodynamic processes in the brain cortex. These functional changes were marked in maintenance workers and absent or weakly exhibited by operational staff, the degree of change being directly related to duration of exposure to electric field. Indices of vegetative functions and speech-motor reactions are given in tabular form.
