Abstract An experiment was carried out to study the effect of ethanol ingestion on susceptibility to lead under conditions of controlled nutrient intake. The synergistic effect of alcohol on lead toxicity is slight when compared to the influence of previously studied nutritional factors such as calcium and iron. The study suggests that the clinically-suspected synergism between alcohol consumption and lead poisoning, sometimes observed among industrial workers, is more likely due to nutritional factors than to mutual enhancement of their closely-related cellular effects.
