Abstract Study to establish to what extent the subjective assessment of groups of workers tested in climatic chambers corroborates objective physical and biological experimental data. 3 tests of 1/4 and 1/2 h were carried out under heat conditions defined as producing "average stress" by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). It is concluded that, in the error margin inherent in any subjective assessment, this can nevertheless be used to define a work environment from the viewpoint of overheating, in conjunction with objective physical and biological parameters. Subjective impressions concerning heat strain and stress have the advantage of being able to be defined in ordinary language.
