Abstract |
Prefabricated units may now measure 7.80 x 2.70 m and weigh up to 7 t. Careful study must therefore be given to their transportation, to the layout of the assembly site and the way the work is carried out. Careful consideration must also be given to the training of the lorry driver, the assembly team and the crane driver. A well-trained team can assemble 45 to 60 prefabricated units a day, equivalent to adding a complete new storey to an average-sized building. The principal hazard is falls from great heights; it is impossible to use safety belts or harness because 8 to 10 men are working at the same time on the assembly site and constantly have to make way for each other. General personnel protective equipment must therefore be installed: outside scaffolding to be moved upwards at the same rate as the building, safety nets, external railings or temporary protection. |
