Abstract Current noise-level measurement techniques do not give satisfactory data for noise control measures when used on continuous stochastically fluctuating noise. An attempt is made to supplement these methods by the multi-moment technique. Studies show the suitability of this technique for: (a) determining the type, location, incidence, time and duration of continuous stochastically fluctuating acoustic phenomena; (b) the statistical analysis of occupational health features in the behaviour of exposed persons; and (c) the collection of data for calculating the probable utility of noise control measures. Scope and limitations of the technique are described.
