Original title Forgiftning med nitrøse gasser ved ensilering - Silo-filler's disease [in Danish]

Abstract Following a brief review of the literature on severe or fatal poisoning due to silage (carbon dioxide, nitrous gases), the authors report on a case observed in Denmark in which a young agricultural worker who was required to enter a silo which had been filled with rye grass the previous day, was severely poisoned and, in spite of hospital treatment, died 41h later. Reference is made to similar cases and the related published data, and the considerable nitrogen-accumulation potential of certain vegetables is mentioned; these not only bind atmospheric nitrogen but, in view of modern agricultural techniques, contain increasingly large quantities of nitrogenous fertiliser.
