Abstract Nitrocellulose is highly flammable in all forms, and fires involving this substance are always extremely dangerous. It is widely used in a variety of applications especially in the plastics industry. The various types of cellulose are classified on the basis of French safety regulations, and individual sections are devoted to the following aspects: nitrocellulose flammability and combusion; fire-fighting principles; packaging, storage and handling recommendations; fire prevention.
