Abstract Occupational exposure to sea fish, shell fish or mollusca can cause rhinitis or asthma. These IgE-dependent respiratory allergies derive from a sensitization to proteins. Diagnosis rests on skin tests with the suspected products, while a bronchial provocation test may be useful for confirming a positive diagnosis of seafood asthma. Technical means of prevention involve measures for reducing the atmospheric concentrations of allergens. Medical prevention involves regular medical surveillance of exposed workers, particularly those having a history of atopy. Replaces the occupational allergy information sheet of 1987 (see 88-1566).
