Abstract This editorial argues in favour of improved cooperation between general practitioners (GPs) and occupational health specialists and employers in the United Kingdom, in particular for the early identification of patients with psychological distress who are vulnerable to the risk of becoming permanently dependant on sickness benefits, while the most favourable decision would be to facilitate their return to work.
