Abstract Following a case of lead poisoning in a city of Colombia, this study was undertaken to establish blood lead levels in children indirectly exposed to lead through the battery recycling activities of close relatives or neighbours. Thirty-two children under the age of twelve were studied. All subjects showed high levels of blood lead (2-9 times maximum acceptable values). There was evidence of Burton lines, indicative of lead poisoning. Implications of these findings are discussed.
