Abstract This study examined policy the policies and practices in managing sickness absence within the Fire and Rescue Service of the United Kingdom. The aim of the study was to understand the views and experiences of policies and practices among different types of staff, the degree to which policies and practices reflect recent recommendations, the barriers and facilitators to adopting recommended practices, and how policies and practices in attendance management might be improved.
