Title Cumulative sensitization and disease in a beryllium oxide ceramics worker cohort
Bibliographic information Dec. 2008, Vol.50, No.12, p.1343-1350. Illus. 27 ref.
Abstract A cohort of 136 workers of a beryllium oxide ceramics plant was followed from 1992 to 2003, including those who left employment, for beryllium sensitization and chronic beryllium disease (CBD). Surveys were conducted in 1992, 1998, 2000, and 2002-2003. Eleven-year cumulative incidences of sensitization and CBD were calculated. In 1992, prevalences were 6% for sensitization and 4% for CBD. After 11 years, sensitization and CBD prevalences were triple the initial 1992 survey results. Implications of these findings are discussed.
