Title Occupational exposure to crystalline silica: Estimating the number of workers potentially at high risk in Italy
Bibliographic information Dec. 2008, Vol.51, No.12, p.941-949. Illus. 49 ref.
Abstract Occupational exposure to free silica is widespread in many economic sectors and is known to cause silicosis. This study was designed to establish a database of enterprises and workers in industrial sectors involving silica exposure in Italy and to estimate the number of workers potentially at high risk of exposure. The enterprises and the number of workers potentially exposed to silica were selected from the Italian database of workplaces. The number of workers potentially at high risk of silica exposure was estimated to be over 28,000. The main sectors involved were construction, mining and quarrying, metalworking and manufacturing of non-metallic products.
