Abstract The dairy industry associated with the production of Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese currently comprises about 130 companies employing around 1000 workers. Most enterprises are small and use traditional methods of production involving much manual handling. The objective of this survey was to evaluate the validity and effectiveness of a concerted ergonomics approach in this sector as a means of satisfying the requirements of Italian legislation on the prevention of musculoskeletal risks. Findings are discussed. While technological evolution in the last decade has provided new and useful tools for eliminating or limiting risk factors, these aids are still poorly distributed, especially in small businesses.
