Abstract The aim of this case-control study was to evaluate risk factors for chronic bronchitis (CB) among workers of a nickel plant in an Arctic region of Russia. It involved 810 workers exposed to potential risk factors and 202 unexposed controls. The investigation included a questionnaire, examination by a physician, spirometry and chest radiography. The main risk factors were smoking (odds ratio (OR) 8.9), followed by exposure to sulfur dioxide (OR 6.35) and nickel aerosols (OR 4.92) and nickel dust (OR 5.30). Implications of these findings are discussed.
