Abstract This research report describes the tasks and findings of a project aimed at quantifying the prevalence and severity of physical and mental workload among the personnel of ambulatory care services in Germany. A methodology was developed and validated on a sample of 721 employees of 97 ambulatory care services in Bavaria. Findings were compared to those obtained for stationary care services. They highlight important differences between the two types of care with respect to physical and mental workload. Guidelines for work organization in ambulatory care services were developed, aimed at reducing the physical and mental workload in this sector of activity.
