Abstract This profile draft was prepared in accordance with guidelines set by the U.S. Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry and the EPA. The key literature related to the toxic effects of cresols is identified and reviewed. Contents: public health statement; health effects; relevance to public health; chemical and physical information; production, import, use and disposal; potential for human exposure; analytical methods; regulations and guidelines; glossary. Health hazards include: irritation of the skin, eyes, respiratory tract and gastrointestinal tract; haematotoxic effects; renal damage. While the EPA had earlier classified cresols as possible human carcinogens (Group C), they are now considered as not being assessable with respect to their carcinogenic potential due to inadequate information.
