Abstract This profile has been prepared in accordance with guidelines set by the US Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry and the EPA. The key literature related to the toxic effects of barium is identified and reviewed. Contents: public health statement; health effects; chemical and physical information; production, import, use and disposal; potential for human exposure; analytical methods; regulations and advisories; glossary. Health hazards: while the toxicity of insoluble barium compounds is low, soluble barium compounds are toxic, causing hypocalcaemia which can lead to cardiac insufficiency, muscle weakness and paralysis, and renal damage. There are insufficient data on developmental toxicity and carcinogenicity. IARC has not classified barium with respect to its human carcinogenicity.
