Title Occupational exposure to organic solvent mixtures during pregnancy and the risk of non-syndromic oral clefts
Bibliographic information Sep. 2006, Vol.63, No.9, p.617-623. 28 ref.
Abstract The objective of this study was to examine the association between maternal occupational exposure to organic solvents during pregnancy and the risk of non-syndromic oral clefts. Subjects included 164 children diagnosed with a cleft lip with/without cleft palate (CL/P), 76 with a cleft palate (CP) and 236 controls. An expert chemist assessed exposures based on detailed descriptions of the womens' occupational tasks. Data were subjected to analysis by logistic regression. The risks of CL/P and CP clefts were associated with exposure to oxygenated solvents (odds ratio (OR) 1.8 and 1.4 respectively), chlorinated solvents (OR 9.4 and 3.8 respectively) and petroleum solvents (OR 3.6 and 1.2 respectively). A dose-response relationship was observed for oxygenated solvents. However the limited number of subjects and the problem of multiple exposures require that these results be interpreted with caution.
