Abstract The emerging African flower industry is a low-wage occupation mainly employing women. A high proportion of the workforce consists of casual labour. This article describes the various international certification systems and codes aimed at ensuring decent working conditions and fair trade in the flower industry, together with their strengths and weaknesses.
