Abstract Formaldehyde has been implicated in the incidence of nasopharyngeal cancer. The substance has widespread uses and is encountered in numerous occupational settings including woodworking, hospitals and the textile and food industries. It is produced by many natural and man-made sources, and is omnipresent in the environment. It has potent sensitizing and irritating properties, the latter suspected of being linked to the incidence of nasopharyngeal cancer.
