Abstract This article explains the various steps involved in carrying out a workplace epidemiologic study from the design stage to the publication of the findings, stressing the importance of working in a team alongside specialists in occupational hazards. The design of the study protocol is described (objectives, means, type of survey, study population, data to be analysed) and methods of data analysis and interpretation are outlined. The different stages are illustrated with a practical example.
