Abstract This short literature review examines the use of mercapturic acids as a biological exposure index for electrophilic chemicals. The review considers the analytical methods available to measure mercapturic acids, the advantages of mercapturic acids compared to other well-validated biomarkers and the high inter-individual variability in mercapturic acids excretion. Recent field and experimental studies confirm the usefulness of mercapturic acids as a biological exposure index for electrophilic chemicals and highlight the advantages of a toxicogenetic approach for a better interpretation of the results of biological monitoring.
