Abstract Sulfur tetrafluoride (SF4) is a colourless, nonflammable gas, very active and corrosive with a sulphur-dioxide-like odour. It is used in many technological processes and is a degradation product of sulfur hexafluoride: a substance used as an isolation material in condensers, cables and transformers. SF4 causes irritation of the respiratory tract. A TLV value of 0.5 mg/m3 and a short-term exposure limit of 1.0 mg/m3 are proposed.
