Abstract This booklet outlines the activities of the South African government in its efforts to significantly reduce the prevalence of silicosis by 2015 and totally eliminate silicosis in the workplace by 2030, in line with the ILO/WHO Global Programme for the Elimination of Silicosis. Describes the magnitude of the problem of silica exposure and silicosis, the identification of target groups at risk, the definition of a preventative strategy, the institutional framework and principal partners, programme implementation and operations, programme monitoring and implementation, national standards and links with international standards.
