Abstract Since 2002, the town of Concarneau (in Finistère, France) has a new type of dry dock that can accommodate large ships for maintenance procedures. The integration of safety considerations into the design of the dry dock resulted in a careenage system with a high degree of safety. This article describes these safety features along with other safety and health measures including control of access to the site, protection against falls and improved circulation and emergency access routes on the dock.
