Abstract The recommendations contained in this report are the result of a process to analyse the risks associated with the control and monitoring systems of mine hoists using programmable control systems. Based on the experience of users, manufacturers and inspectors of the Quebec Commission for Occupational Safety and Health (Commission pour la santé et la sécurité du travail - CSST), this process took into account the experiences in the mining environment, together with applications of programmable control technologies in other types of industries. The recommendations address the general structure of control and monitoring systems, specific components and periodic tests and verifications.
