Abstract This project consists of a critical analysis of the literature on the relationship between the development of bladder tumours and fire-fighting. On the basis of limited evidence, cases of bladder tumour could be related to the fire-fighting occupation if other factors such as smoking are excluded. Prior use of analgesics containing phenacetin and a medical history of multiple infections of the urinary tract that could contribute to the development of bladder cancer should be taken into consideration in establishing the diagnosis.
