Abstract Systems containing flammable gas, inert gas and air were studied to evaluate the ISO 10156 method for calculating the flammability of gas mixtures. The fire potential of flammable gases was the focal point of a separate article (see CIS 05-681), while this article discusses the influence of inert gases on the flammability of gas mixtures. The estimated results given by ISO 10156 were compared with measurements based on the German standard DIN 51649-1. The comparison shows that ISO 10156 supplies conservative values, which can be regarded as safe in all cases. However, in a number of cases, ISO underestimates the inerting capacity so that non-flammable gas mixtures are considered to be flammable.
