Abstract |
This special issue details the legal consequences of the explosion at a gas plant in 1998 in Longford, near Melbourne, Australia, and in particular the criminal trial which took place in 2001 which ruled that the operator of the plant had failed in its duty of care to its employees under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 1985 (CIS 88-1751). Topics covered: introduction; the charges; the company's defence; sentencing; learning from Longford; new bill on corporate manslaughter; conclusion.
