Abstract 4-Aminobiphenyl is used in the rubber industry as an antioxidant and in the synthesis of azo dyes. It has a relatively low toxicity but is highly genotoxic and carcinogenic. The oral LD50 values for this compound in rodents range from 205 to 500mg/kg. 4-Aminobiphenyl and its metabolite N-hydroxy-4-aminobiphenyl demonstrate the ability to induce gene mutations in bacterial tests. This and other metabolites produce adducts with the DNA and RNA of bladder epithelial cells. The carcinogenic potential of 4-aminobiphenyl has been evidenced in some animal species and in humans. The substance induces bladder tumours. A threshold limit value (time-weighted average) of 0.001mg/m3 is proposed.
