Abstract This guide, aimed at employers and the self-employed as well as persons responsible for managing staff health and safety, provides essential guidance for the correct selection and use of respiratory protective equipment (RPE) in the workplace in order to comply with the law. It explains when RPE is to be used and presents a step-by-step approach for deciding on the right level of protection for a given hazardous substance and for the selection of the correct RPE for the particular wearer and the work environment. It also describes common misuses of RPE, and explains how to prevent them. Includes advice on how to ensure that the selected RPE keeps working effectively.
