Abstract When one considers the legislation adopted by various countries with respect to the compensation of silicosis, one observes that silicosis is covered according to several different systems that can be broadly grouped together under the following headings: compensation by means of specific legislation; compensation within the framework of accident insurance (based on lists or on special systems); blanket coverage under the general provisions of employment hazards. This publication presents in detail the measures enacted in three countries that can be considered as being representative of the main legislative systems: Union of South Africa (specific legislation); Great Britain (special systems); Germany (lists).
