Abstract Workers' protection is above all based on assessing the risks and introducing an appropriate prevention policy. The assessment of chemical risks is often difficult on account of the wide variety of products and preparations used. To assist enterprises faced with this problem, the French Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (INRS), in conjunction with the National Prevention and Protection Centre (CNPP), has developed a simplified method for assessing health, safety and environmental risks involving three phases: inventory of products and materials used; hierarchy of potential hazards; hazard evaluation. The method presented in this article has been applied in several enterprises in various sectors, and the results concur with the views of experts.
