Title Osteoarthritis of the hip joint and farm work
Bibliographic information Feb. 2004, Vol.45, No.2, p.202-209. 44 ref.
Abstract A group of 369 farmers with hip joint osteoarthritis were identified together with a matched control group of farmers without hip or knee problems. All were invited to an interview and physical examination. The following risk factors of osteoarthritis of the hip were found: working in larger dairy and swine operations; milking more than 40 cows daily (odds ratio OR=4.5 compared to farmers not working in dairy production); working more than five hours per day in animal barns over a long period of time (OR=13.3 compared to those who did not work with animals). However, working on large farms (>100ha) had a significantly decreased risk (OR=0.14 compared to working on smaller farms).
