Title Retrospective exposure assessment and quality control in an international multi-centre case-control study
Bibliographic information Jan. 2003, Vol.47, No.1, p.37-47. Illus. 24 ref.
Abstract This article presents the exposure assessment method and quality control procedure used in an international, multi-centre case-control study within a joint Nordic and Italian cohort. The study was conducted to evaluate whether occupational exposure to carcinogens influenced the frequency of chromosomal aberrations in peripheral lymphocytes, giving rise to an increased cancer risk. Occupational hygienists assessed exposures in each participating country: Denmark, Finland, Italy, Norway and Sweden. An independent Spanish occupational hygienist team coordinated harmonization of the assessment criteria and the quality control procedure. Variations in exposures assessed by the different assessors are discussed, together with the implications for the consistency of exposure assessments in international retrospective case-control studies.
