Abstract This document presents the results of a survey carried out between 1996 and 1999 by the German Institute for Labour Market and Employment Research (Institut für Arbeitsmarkt und Berufsforschung - IAB) among a representative sample of enterprises. The focus of the study was mainly on non-conventional working hours. The analysis of full-time and part-time work, of fixed and flexible working hours, of shift and weekend work and of overtime shows that full-time work remains the dominant form of work. However, the increasing trend towards flexibility in working hours is a means of preserving employment. Another form of work which is also increasingly being adopted consists of variable working hours, which has a positive impact on job security and increases workers' sense of responsibility.
