Abstract In the United Kingdom, more than 27,000 persons permanently lose their capacity for employment each year, following disabling illness or injury. Many would no doubt be able to return to work if effective rehabilitation systems were in place. This article discusses various possibilities for improving the employability of disabled persons and facilitating their return to work, based on responses to a questionnaire addressed to trade union safety representatives in the United Kingdom.
