Abstract Three epidemiological surveys were carried out to study accidents involving exposure to blood (AEB) among private-sector employees in the region of Ile-de-France (Paris region, France): a survey conducted by occupational physicians through their practice, a survey in health care enterprises and a survey in enterprises considered to be risky (garbage collection, cleaning, housekeeping, security personnel, catering, etc.). Such accidents had a prevalence of 0.33% among all private-sector health care workers and of 0.075% for non-occupational factors. Victims of AEBs were predominately women (62%); the most affected age group was 35-44 (34%). Intervention in enterprises has created awareness for the AEB problem and has enabled the creation or reinforcement of procedures to be followed in the event of AEBs.
