Abstract Conclusions of this criteria document: Benzoic acid is slightly irritating to the skin and eyes while sodium benzoate is only a slight eye irritant. The acute toxicity of the two substances is low but they are known to cause non-immunological contact reactions (pseudoallergy). Data from animal studies indicate embryotoxic and foetototoxic effects for sodium benzoate. Summaries in French and in Spanish.
