Abstract Safety consultants play a complex role. Their work environment is subject to constant change due to technological, economic, legislative, social and cultural factors. Furthermore, they have to interact with a wide variety of participants from different backgrounds: indeed, an important aspect of their job involves convincing managers and workers to take on a larger share of responsibility in occupational safety and health. This publication describes the job of safety consultants in the paper and pulp industry, but is also more generally applicable to all industrial sectors.
