Abstract The main purpose of these modifications of the Regulations on the quality of the working environment is the avoidance of unnecessary exposure to hazardous substances even if such exposure would be at below a tolerable level. In addition, employers unable to comply with articles 5 and 7 for technical reasons must supply the affected workers with respiratory protective equipment satisfying NIOSH and MSHA standards and make sure that they wear it. These modifications also affect "excursion limits", i.e. exposure limits for substances that have not been assigned a short-term exposure limit. In annex: list of TLVs (CAS number, TWA, STEL, skin and carcinogenicity notation) for approx. 900 substances; calculation of exposures for workers present at several work stations and for workers exposed to several substances; list of 42 substances whose recycling is prohibited; list of carcinogens (C1 and C2) and isocyanates.
