Abstract This directive states the rules that should be implemented as a minimum in the EC Member States' regulations concerning mines and quarries. More strict rules may be implemented, if the Member States wish to do so. Main topics: general provisions, employers obligations, protection from fire, explosions and health-endangering atmospheres, escape and rescue facilities, communication, warning and alarm systems, informing workers, health surveillance, workers' participation, minimum requirements for safety and health, adaptation procedures of the directive. Mineral extraction by dredging is not subject to this directive. Minimum safety and health requirements are outlined in an annex.
