Abstract This Directive lays down common measures for the contained use of genetically modified microorganisms with a view to protecting human health and environment. After a definition of the scope of the Directive and a classification of microorganisms and related operations, provisions specify principles of good occupational safety and hygiene practice, users' obligations (notifications with detailed information about the content of the notification, record keeping of work carried out), the role and attributions of the competent authorities, the obligation to provide information to the public, and in case of an accident to persons liable to be affected by the accident, to the competent authorities and to the Commission. Annexes: techniques of genetic modifications, criteria for classifying genetically modified microorganisms, safety assessment parameters to be taken into account, containment measures, different types of required information.
