Abstract The main provision of the Act (notified in the Commonwealth Gazette of 13 Oct. 1949) is to authorise the issuing of regulations on machine safety. Of the regulations issued under the authority of the Act, the Boilers and Pressure Vessels Regulations were issued on 24 Feb. 1955, commenced on 15 Mar. 1955 and last modified on 1 Oct. 1983. They cover the following main points: design and fittings; inspection; boiler attendants; miscellaneous (testing; notices to be given when boilers or pressure vessels are disposed of; notification of accidents; boiler or pressure vessel not to be used unless in safe working condition; prohibition of interference). The Inspection of Machinery Regulations commenced on 15 Jan. 1951 and are presented here with their modifications till 1986. They concern: interpretation; exemptions (transport equipment, office appliances, domestic machinery); inspections; safety provisions (dangerous machinery, risks of accidents, circular saws, faulty or defective machinery, notification of accidents); noise and hearing conservation.
