Abstract These model regulations were developed at the Commonwealth (federal) level, with the intention that their provisions be included in the legislation of each Australian State and Territory. Their requirements include: suppliers of hazardous substances should provide appropriate material safety data sheets (MSDS) and labelling together with the substances; employers must ensure the availability of the MSDS and labels in the workplace; employers must maintain registers of hazardous substances used in the workplace; potentially exposed workers must be trained and provided with information regarding the substances they are in contact with; risk assessment and exposure control must be implemented when necessary; the health of potentially exposed workers must be monitored through health surveillance; relevant public bodies and emergency services must have access to information on hazardous substances present in workplaces.
