Abstract English translation of the document abstracted under CIS 88-1761. It explains how exposure limits (8h time-weighted averages) for substances and materials are established and how they can be used for evaluating the health and safety aspects of work with substances and materials. The guidance note includes the following sections: list of exposure limits for air pollution from 548 substances; list of 278 organic solvents with tentative exposure limits; list of exposure limits for 21 different types of dust; list of 5 process-related exposure limits (welding) (unchanged from the 1985 issue); list of 277 substances considered to be carcinogenic (an extension from the 1985 list of 42). List of intended changes: reduction of the exposure limit for 17 substances; addition of 11 substances; addition of 5 substances considered to be carcinogenic. The lists are effective from 1 May 1988.
