Resumen [inglés] The purpose of the Act is to assure safe and healthy working conditions by enforcing the standards developed under the Act, by assisting and encouraging the States in their efforts, and by providing for research, information, education and training in the field of occupational safety and health. It sets out the responsibilities of the Department of Labor in the promulgation and enforcement of standards, establishes an Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission consisting of 3 members appointed by the President and a National Advisory Committee consisting of 12 members appointed by the Secretary of Labor, sets out the research and related activities to be carried out by the Department of Health, Education and Welfare in consultation with the Department of Labor, and provides for the establishment of a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the appointment of an additional Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health.
